Tax
You should be prepared that when you shop for anything in the U.S. from a pair of sneakers to a lawn mower
or a cup of coffee, tax will be added at the cash register. The tax varies from state to state. The Georgia sales
tax rate is 4%, and the maximum GA sales tax after local surtaxes is 8%. Georgia allows counties and cities to
enact additional sales taxes on top of the Georgia sales tax to most purchases, with some exceptions
including groceries. You should also be aware that when you eat at a restaurant in the U.S. it is custom to tip
the waitress 15 – 20% of the check. You also tip your hair-dresser and your valet (parking).
Groceries
The place to buy food and household items are grocery stores such as Publix, Kroger, Whole Foods Market,
and the Local Farmer Markets. Prices can be expected to be in comparison to Danish supermarkets or less.
Also, you may benefit from becoming a member of a members-only warehouse club in Atlanta
like Sam’s Club or Costco. Kroger in particular, offers a Kroger Shopper’s card which gives special prices
and discounts for members on groceries and on gasoline prices at participating Shell gas stations.
If you desire authentic Danish food and drink items, Nordisk Import, should cover most of your needs –
here you can buy all sorts of Danish specialties. You can also buy traditional Danish Baked Goods at the
local Danish Delight Bakery in Alpharetta. Finally the IKEA Food Market for Scandinavian Food Items
is worth visiting when you have cravings...
Clothing/Accessories
In Atlanta, malls are widespread. Malls include a number of stores located in the same facility.
There are several malls that carry all sorts of merchandise and all kinds of clothing. If you would like

There are not really any shopping streets in Atlanta, like we know them from Denmark or other European cities.
However, it is worth visiting Atlantic Station or the Virginia Highlands if you feel like going for a nice outdoor
shopping stroll. These two areas also have great restaurants and the movie theater at Atlantic Station is great.
Finally, we also have some local Danish entrepreneurs. Mikkeline Maria and Eric Hicks create and sell beautiful
jewelry made from hand-drilled freshwater pearls and hand-rolled leather. You can visit their Facebook Page
“Pearl Couture” or email them at

Furniture and Home Goods
There are numerous furniture stores in Atlanta. Depending on the quality and style you prefer, there is usually
a store that will cover your needs. BOVA Furniture is a Danish-owned furniture store.
If you are only here for a short period you might want to consider renting your furniture.
There are several companies that offer furniture rental and can deliver as well as set up your furniture so they
are ready in your home upon arrival. Companies are among others.
Craigslist
Craigslist Atlanta is a centralized network of online communities, featuring free online classified advertisements
with sections devoted to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, services, community, gigs, resumes,
and discussion forums. You can find and buy everything on Craigslist and it is also a good way
for you to sell items you no longer need.
