Social Security Number

The American Social Security Number is like the Danish CPR-number. However you are not automatically provided

with a Social Security Number. You have to apply for a Social Security Number when entering the US.

Like in Denmark it’s important to have a Social Security Number for the businesses and authorities to identify you.

For this reason we suggest you apply for one shortly after arrival. However, note that the US Immigration needs time

to process your immigration papers so you should allow approx. 10 days before visiting the Social Security Office.

Your local security office can be found by visiting this website and entering your zip code.

If you live in Atlanta your local Social Security office is:

Social Security

Suite 2860 FLR 28

401 W Peachtree St, NW

Atlanta, GA 30308

(You can park in front of the building)

You will have to bring your passport and your visa/immigration papers.

You will also have to fill out form/document SS-5 beforehand. This form can be found on this website.

You will leave the SS office with a confirmation letter stating that you have applied for a social security number.

You should receive the card within 2 weeks.
