On October 18, DACC hosted the presentation “My Father, Victor Borge - A Daugther’s Reflections” in our own offices in Roswell. January 3, 2009 would have seen Victor Borge’s 10oth anniversary, and DACC decided to commemorate and celebrate the beloved Danish-American humorist, entertainer and pianist by inviting his Daugther, Janet Borge Crowle, to do a presentation on his life.
Janet Borge Crowle told the story of her father’s life as seen through her eyes; A story about family ties, a loving father and family, and her and her brother’s adoption.
She told about her father’s life and career - His escape from a fate as church organist and his escape from the nazis to the free US. She told of his struggle with the American language, and his struggle with getting a break-through “overthere”, and how he finally did it by way of his special humoristic style on the American Ed Sullivan Show.
She told us the story of his death, how he passed away peacefully in his beloved Wisconsin and how his final wish was to get his ashes burried in two places - half in Denmark next to his parents, and half in the US next to his wife, who had passed away three months earlier.
Janet Borge Crowle delivered a very heart-felt and emotional presentation, and really captivated the audience with her story.
After the presentation, she was very open to answering questions, and people were eager to ask. She also made an effort to mingle with the guests before and after the presentation which was greatly appreciated.
If you want to know more about Victor Borge and his life, we can reveal that The Danish TV Station DR is in the process of making a documentary, honoring his 100th anniversary. It will be aired between Christmas and New Years. PBS has also made a documentary on Victor Borge. You can contact your local PBS affiliate and request a showing. Also, Janet Borge Crowle will be speaking at the Danish Rebild Festival, celebrating Danish-American ties, in July 2009.
At DACC we would like to send out a warm thank you to Janet and her very supporting husband Jim for visiting us here in Atlanta, and sharing their story and the many lovely photographs from Victor Borge's life and career with us. Below you can see pictures from the lovely evening.
